6 Top Tips: How to Study Now

Returning to Learning for Adult Learners

People choose to study something new or enrol in a course for all sorts of reasons — whether it’s a career change, personal growth, or simply following a long-held passion. Whatever your reason, stepping back into learning can feel a bit daunting — especially if it’s been a while since you last studied.

To help you get off to a confident start, here are our top 6 tips for how to study successfully right now:

Tip 1: Choose the Right Course Format for You

It’s not just about what you want to learn — it’s also about how you’ll learn best.
If flexibility is key for you, a self-paced home study course (also known as distance learning) might be the ideal option. You can fit your studies around work, family, or other commitments, without the pressure of strict deadlines — unless you choose to set some yourself. Learning at your own pace doesn’t mean learning alone — you’ll still have tutor support along the way.

Tip 2: Create a Study Routine That Works

Studying independently means you’ll need to manage your time well.
Start by setting some realistic goals and block out time in your diary (or phone calendar) for reading, watching videos, or completing assignments. You could:

  • Use a wall planner to track your progress
  • Set up a Trello board (we have a free study template you can use!)
  • Pick a regular study day or slot in shorter sessions during your week

Build habits early on — it’s easier to stay motivated when you have structure.

Tip 3: Study in Short Bursts

You don’t need to sit for hours at a time — in fact, shorter sessions are more effective.
Try the Pomodoro Technique: work for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break, then repeat. At the start and end of each study session, take a minute to review what you’ve just read or learned — this helps with memory and recall.

Tip 4: Discover Your Best Learning Conditions

Everyone has a unique learning rhythm. Some people study best in the early morning, others late at night. Some thrive in total silence, while others focus better with background music — especially instrumental tracks with around 60 beats per minute, which can help improve concentration and memory.

Experiment to find what works for you. The most important thing? Stay relaxed and focused.

Tip 5: Make it Visual and Practical

Use coloured pens, sticky notes, or highlighters to mark key ideas. Don’t be afraid to write in the margins or create visual mind maps.
Most importantly — apply what you’re learning as soon as you can. Even if it feels awkward at first, practice builds confidence, and helps you retain new skills.

Tip 6: Stay Connected with Your Tutor

All Imagination courses include personal tutor support — and it’s there for a reason!
Your tutor is your learning partner. Share your goals, ask questions, or reach out when you need help. Whether you’re stuck on a module or need encouragement, your tutor is only an email or phone call away.

So… How Long Will It Take?

There’s no expiry date on your course. Some students complete their training in as little as two months; others may take a year or more, especially if life gets in the way — and that’s okay.

That said, keeping up the momentum really helps. If you’ve had to pause, get back in touch with your tutor to help you restart with confidence.
